Book Club

Join us for our first book club meeting of the New Year! We’ll be discussing Elizabeth Graver’s novel Kantika, which follows the journey of Rebecca Cohen, a member of the Sephardic elite in early 20th-century Istanbul. As Rebecca navigates personal and financial upheavals, she builds a new life across Spain, Cuba, and New York. The novel is a poignant exploration of resilience, beauty, and the challenges faced by women. We’ll also discuss book selections for the upcoming months.

About the Author:
Elizabeth Graver, born in Los Angeles and a graduate of Wesleyan University and Washington University in St. Louis, is a celebrated author and professor at Boston College. Kantika is her sixth novel.

Tot Shabbat- Sukkot Edition

Join us for a special Tot Shabbat service with Rabbi Keller and Ms. Susan in the Cohen/Friedkin Sanctuary, followed by dinner, dessert, and a creative art project where everyone can help craft decorations for the NCECE Sukkah. Due to the number of anticipated attendees, doors will open at 4:30 PM to allow time for security procedures, and the service will begin promptly at 4:45 PM.

Please bring a donation for local animal rescues and shelters, such as dog or cat toys, Purina Pro Plan canned food, Nylabone or Kong chew toys, blankets, or beds.

Monthly Mitzvahs

As a Congregation with a Conscience®, social action initiatives are integral to our synagogue’s mission. Throughout the year, we host various events and collections for local charities. As a united effort, the Nadel Center for Early Childhood Education, The Barry Ira Graff School for Living Judaism, and Congregation B’nai Israel participate in volunteer opportunities and collections centered around a central guiding theme each month.

September’s social action theme is Kehillah Kedosha, a holy community, emphasizing the importance of helping others and teaching our children the value of giving back. Join us in fostering a compassionate and supportive community through acts of kindness and service.

Send some love right now with one of our Israel Support Packages. Each box is filled with delightful gifts, sweet surprises, and love, and are not just a morale booster for soldiers and evacuated families – they also serve to boost Israel’s wartime economy.
